The short answer
We install printed wallpaper murals in Coral Gables by measuring the wall, confirming the panel layout, smoothing the surface and hanging each panel in sequence so the image lines up across every seam. Order the mural with bleed allowance and send us the wall dimensions first.
A wallpaper mural is a single image printed across a set of numbered panels, so it has to be assembled like a puzzle on the wall. In Coral Gables we install botanical scenes in breakfast nooks, maps and skylines in home offices, soft landscapes in nurseries and large abstracts in entry halls. WallStyle Installers comes about 11 miles northeast from Miami to homes in 33134 and 33146. Below is how we take a mural from a box of panels to a continuous picture, and the decisions you will want to make before ordering one.
Before you order: measuring for a mural
Most mural companies print to the size you give them, plus a few inches of extra image at each edge called bleed. Ceilings in older Coral Gables houses are not always level, and plaster corners are rarely plumb, so that extra margin is what lets us trim to a crooked line without cutting off part of the picture.
We are glad to measure the wall before you place the order. We note the widest and tallest points, the location of outlets, switches and vents, and any trim that will cut into the image. Then you can decide how the scene should be cropped, for example keeping a horizon line above a sofa back or a focal tree away from a doorway.
Paste-the-wall, prepasted or peel-and-stick
Murals come in a few formats, and each one calls for a different technique. Non-woven panels usually go up with paste applied to the wall, which allows small adjustments while matching. Traditional paper panels are pasted on the back and booked before hanging. Peel-and-stick versions skip adhesive entirely but are unforgiving if a panel goes on crooked.
For humid South Florida rooms we tend to favor non-woven or vinyl-coated murals hung with a quality adhesive over a primed wall. Peel-and-stick can work for a rental or a short-term look, but in summer heat its bond can soften on walls that get direct sun.
- Non-woven: breathable, easy to position, removes in full strips
- Vinyl-coated: wipeable, good for kitchens and kids' rooms
- Paper: rich print quality, needs the most care to hang
- Peel-and-stick: no paste, best on very smooth, cool walls
Assembling the image on site
We open the box, lay the panels out in order and check every one against the layout sheet. Printing errors, missing panels or color mismatches are much easier to sort out with the supplier before anything is pasted.
Next we snap a plumb line for the first panel, which sets the alignment for the rest. Each panel goes up, gets smoothed from the center outward and is matched to its neighbor at eye level, where a misaligned feature would be most obvious. We trim at the ceiling, baseboard and openings, then remove cover plates and cut neatly around boxes before reinstalling them.
Coral Gables rooms that suit a mural
A mural needs a fairly open wall to read as a picture. Dining room end walls, the wall behind a bed, a hallway leading to a garden door or a stair wall all work well. Rooms with a lot of windows usually do better with a traditional repeating paper.
Think about sun as well. A west-facing wall that gets afternoon glare can fade inks over time. If that is the only option, ask your supplier about UV-resistant printing, and keep blinds partly closed during the hottest hours.
After the install
Keep the AC running at its normal setting for a couple of days while the adhesive cures, and avoid hanging pictures on the mural during that time. Vinyl-coated murals can be wiped with a damp cloth; uncoated paper should be dusted only.
We hang murals for neighbors in South Miami, West Miami, Miami Springs, Sweetwater and Cutler Bay too.
